Shifting Gears: What the EV Boom Means for Artists

Hey everyone!

So, I was reading this article about electric vehicles (EVs) leading in several car categories in California. Pretty cool, right? It got me thinking, not just about cars, but about how shifts in technology and what people want can really change things up. It reminded me a lot of what we, as artists, experience.

Think about it: just a few years ago, streaming music was still pretty new, and now it’s how most of us listen to tunes. Or how suddenly everyone was talking about NFTs, even if that conversation has quieted down a bit. Technology moves fast, and what people are drawn to changes, sometimes quicker than we expect.

This EV thing is a big example. It’s not just about cleaner air, which is awesome. It’s a huge technological leap in a very familiar industry – cars. People are adapting, companies are adapting, and the whole landscape is changing. We’re seeing new companies emerge and old ones scrambling to keep up.

And honestly? It feels familiar to my own journey as an artist. When I first started out, I was building websites and branding for clients. Digital tools were everything. Then, I wanted to get back to painting, to working with my hands. But even in the art world, technology plays a huge role, doesn’t it?

We have online galleries, social media to share our work, digital tools for creating mock-ups or even digital art itself. My Etsy shop wouldn’t exist without online platforms. And just like people are choosing EVs, art buyers are discovering artists online in new ways. They’re responding to different trends, maybe looking for art that feels more authentic or that tells a story.

So, what does this mean for us creators? It’s a reminder that staying curious and open to new ways of doing things is super important. We don’t have to jump on every single new tech trend, but understanding how technology is shaping how people connect, consume, and even think, can help us adapt our own practices.

Maybe it means trying a new digital tool to help plan a painting, or exploring a different online platform to share your work. Maybe it’s just about staying aware of how the world is changing and how that might influence what resonates with people. It’s all about adapting and finding new avenues for our creativity, just like the car industry is figuring out the electric future.
