Friends, I have to share this recent find! I spotted this gorgeous plant at the nursery, and for just $19, I couldn’t leave it behind. It’s a real beauty, but it’s also a bit of a wild child. It has these amazing, extensive aerial roots, and no support system or moss poles to speak of. So, the big question is: how do I give this green gem the best possible start in its new home?
First things first, let’s talk about support. Those aerial roots are a plant’s way of anchoring itself and seeking moisture and nutrients from the air. For a plant like this, which seems to naturally want to climb or trail, providing some structure is key to its long-term health and happiness. A simple stake or even a piece of driftwood can make a world of difference. I’m leaning towards a moss pole, as it mimics a natural climbing surface and helps retain moisture for those aerial roots, encouraging them to attach and grow.
When it comes to potting, the goal is to provide enough space for root growth without letting the plant sit in soggy soil. Since it has so many aerial roots, I want to make sure the potting mix is well-draining. A chunky mix, perhaps with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir, would be ideal. This will allow for good aeration around the roots and prevent waterlogging, which is something most plants, especially those with aerial roots, don’t appreciate.
I’m also considering how to encourage those aerial roots to do their thing. Sometimes, increasing humidity can help. Misting the plant, using a pebble tray, or even placing it near a humidifier can encourage the aerial roots to seek out moisture and attach to their new support system. It’s fascinating how these plants adapt and grow!
And what about propagation? With so many healthy roots and stems, this plant looks like a prime candidate for propagation down the line. Once it’s settled in and showing good growth, I might consider taking cuttings to share or expand my collection. But for now, the focus is on getting this $19 treasure established and thriving.
It’s exciting to take a plant that’s a bit neglected or just starting out and give it the care it needs to flourish. This one’s going to be a fun project, and I can’t wait to see how it grows! Stay tuned for updates on its progress!
