Today, September 9th, 2025, with the current state of VR technology, it’s not just a pipe dream anymore. It’s a very real, very exciting possibility.
Why DOOM in VR?
DOOM’s core gameplay is practically begging for a VR translation. Think about it:
- Movement: The classic fast-paced running and dodging? Imagine that with smooth locomotion or even a teleport option that feels integrated into the gameplay, not just a gimmick.
- Combat: Strafing, jumping, and unleashing hell with a double-barreled shotgun? In VR, you’d be physically dodging projectiles and aiming down sights with your own hands. The immersion would be next-level.
- Environment: The labyrinthine levels of DOOM, with their claustrophobic corridors and open arenas, are perfect for VR. You could feel the oppressive atmosphere and genuinely explore the demonic landscapes.
What Would Make it Work?
If a developer were to tackle a classic like DOOM for VR, a few things would be essential for it to really hit home:
- True VR Movement: None of that clunky, nausea-inducing stuff. We need options for smooth locomotion that feel natural, maybe even incorporating some kind of arm-swinging mechanic for added immersion without being exhausting.
- Intuitive Controls: Being able to dual-wield weapons, reload on the fly, and manage your inventory with hand gestures or intuitive button presses is crucial. Think of how satisfying it feels to physically pick up ammo or switch weapons in modern VR titles.
- Sound Design: The iconic sound effects of DOOM are half the experience. In VR, with good spatial audio, hearing a Pinky charging at you from behind or the distant roar of a Mancubus would amplify the terror and excitement.
- Visceral Feedback: Haptic feedback is key. Feeling the kick of the BFG or the impact of a demon’s attack through controllers would make the combat feel so much more real.
- Respecting the Original: It’s about modernizing, not reinventing. The core spirit, the level design, and the enemy encounters need to feel like the DOOM we know and love, just experienced in a whole new way.
Which Classics Could Shine?
Besides DOOM, there are a ton of franchises that would absolutely crush it in VR. Imagine stepping into the shoes of Master Chief in Halo: Combat Evolved, exploring the eerie derelict spaceships of Dead Space, or solving intricate puzzles in Half-Life 2.
